Well, up here in Boston, there was a definite chill in the air this morning - and frost on the ground. It's getting colder and so it's time to change our diets a little bit to add more nourishing, warming foods to counteract the weather outside.
From a Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) perspective, we are taught to "eat with the season" and in the autumn, that means eating fewer cold, raw, uncooked foods (like salads) and eating more warm, cooked foods - soups, steamed vegetables like winter squash, broccoli, sweet potatoes, and yams. Eat more yellow and red (warmer colored) foods. Start your day with hot oatmeal. Drink warm tea, not ice water, throughout the day. Put that ice cream away until summer returns (sorry!)...

A delicious and entirely perfect autumn dish is this Carrot-Squash pie recipe, taken from Paul Pitchford's book called Healing with Whole Foods.
2 cups grated carrots
3 cups pureed squash (pumpkin, winter squash, butternut squash all work)
1/4 onion minced
1 tsp grated ginger root
1/2 tsp each coriander and cumin
1 tsp Dijon mustard
1 tsp sea salt
1/4 cup ground almonds
1 premade pie crust
