Acupuncture and Herbs = Your Team for Weight Loss!

Acupuncture can help you lose weight!Permanent weight loss and successful weight management can be very difficult - requiring regular workouts and a consistently good, healthy diet.  It’s especially difficult this time of year - as we are flooded with holiday treats and required to sit sedentary for hours on end as we travel to see loved ones.

The secret to weight loss is not a big secret at all - it’s actually a simple mathematical equation that calories eaten must be less than calories burned during normal daily activities and exercise.  Strategies you can use to balance this equation towards weight loss are
  • Increasing exercise, if even by 10-20 minutes/day
  • Decreasing caloric intake
  • Increasing daily activity level, for example, by taking breaks during the day to stretch, walk around the office; taking stairs instead of elevators or escalators; parking further from the office or grocery store, etc
  • Decreasing your daily stress level to allow yourself to feel able to make lasting changes to your diet/exercise regimen
  • Get regular acupuncture treatments! (really!!)

More about the acupuncture part.  How exactly can acupuncture (and Chinese herbal medicine) help you lose weight?

Acupuncture weight loss treatments involve inserting needles to particular acupoints on the skin.  These points stimulate the body to release endorphins, which may help controlling appetite - they have a relaxing and calming effect that helps the body to deal with stress, frustration, and food-related anxiety.  Moreover, stimulating these acupoints help enhance metabolism and remind the body how to properly digest food so that you can get the most energy possible out of the food you eat.  Finally, acupuncture can increase your energy level, making you feel more willing and able to exercise.

Chinese herbal medicine has similar effects, but instead of working from the outside of the body to influence the inside, herbs provide a more direct effect on the body’s interior.  Herbs can be used to control cravings, increase metabolism, improve digestion, and stabilize blood sugar.

If you are coming to Stepping Stone with the main focus of losing weight, we will start by discussing the nature of your concerns.  During your initial consultation, we will talk about your eating habits, appetite, energy levels, digestive health, sleep habits, exercise habits, among other topics.  We will feel your pulses and look at your tongue (as we do with all of our patients) and assess the general state of energy in several levels and locations in your body. 

auricular acupunctureWe will then talk to you about your Traditional Chinese Medical (TCM) diagnosis and begin your treatment - we may choose acupoints on your arms/legs, belly, back, and/or ears depending on your diagnosis.  We will also discuss whether or not we recommend Chinese herbal medicine and we will give you suggestions for foods and recipes that will help you on your weight loss journey - foods that fit your particular energetic constitution.

We are here to help our patients through their weight loss endeavors and we feel that acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine can be extremely beneficial when they are used regularly.  We aren’t offering a quick fix, but a gradual, long term solution for helping you find and maintain your healthiest weight!
