Getting a cold or coming down with the flu? Think acupuncture and herbs!

It is that time of year again – Cold and Flu season!

In this country, acupuncture is becoming more and more commonly used for pain conditions…but many people are still unaware of the fact that they should call their acupuncturist when they are starting to get sick, as an acupuncture treatment and/or herbal prescription they may reduce the intensity and duration of their sickness!

Chinese Medicine – acupuncture and Herbal Medicine – has been used for thousands of years to treat numerous health conditions, including symptoms of the common cold and influenza (“the flu.”) Acupuncture works to boost the immune system and alleviate symptoms so you can go back to feeling your best more quickly than you otherwise would!

In recent years, small clinical research studies have supported this ancient knowledge. Studies have found that acupuncture may reduce symptoms of the common cold, reduce nasal congestion and increase nasal air flow, and reduce fever associated with the flu. Moreover, studies have shown that Chinese Herbal formulas can be safe and effective methods of treating influenza, with one recent trial showing that a particular herbal formula is as effective as Tamiflu.

The best time to come in for treatment? Right when symptoms begin. Sometimes a treatment with acupuncture and herbs at this stage can even prevent the sickness from really taking hold.

We also recommend that if you are someone who tends to get sick a lot during the winter, or you are at a greater risk of colds and flus (ie, you are pregnant, have a compromised immune system, have a child in daycare, etc.) that you come in for regular immune-boosting acupuncture sessions during the winter.
