When thinking about what acupuncture can treat, most people tend to think only of pain. However, acupuncture can also be a very effective treatment for many mental-emotional disorders, including anxiety. At our clinic, we treat children, teens, and adults for a whole spectrum of anxiety-related disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, situational or social anxiety, obsessive or compulsive behaviors related to anxiety, anxiety related to hormonal fluctuations (such as during pregnancy, PMS, or menopause in women), ADHD-related anxiety, and insomnia related to worry or repetitive thoughts.
From a traditional acupuncture perspective, every system in our body exerts an effect on our physical and emotional selves. When different systems are out of balance, just as they may create issues with digestion, or headaches, or pain, they can also create issues such as excessive worry, obsessive thinking, jitteriness, nervousness, irrational fear, panic attacks, inability to focus, or mental tension. Based on your individual presentation of how anxiety manifests, a trained acupuncturist can parse apart which systems are affected and treat accordingly, to once again create balance in the body, calm the nervous system response, and "calm the shen" which means to quiet the mind/spirit.
Recently, clinical research has shown that acupuncture may be an effective treatment for generalized anxiety disorder, PTSD, and anxiety and major depressive disorder during pregnancy. There has been much promising evidence that acupuncture can help with situational anxiety as well, such as pre-test anxiety in female students, anxiety in healthcare volunteers (which is essentially why groups such as Acupuncturists Without Borders came into existence - to provide acupuncture to relief workers following disasters), pre-operative anxiety in adult surgical patients, and anxiety prior to dental procedures.
Anxiety is incredibly common - if you or someone you know is suffering, please give us a call. We would love to help.
